California Hiking - you will want to go every weekend!

By Penelope SanMateo

Hiking in California during certain times of the year is so fabulous that you will want to go all the time. You may want to take a weekend or maybe a whole week to see the different places to go. There is hiking available around rivers, glaciers, deserts, the coastline and in the grasslands. Take your pick.

Mount Tallac offers you a 9.4 mile round trip hike at an elevation reaching 9.735 ft. The gain on this hike is 3.255 ft so make sure you have lots of water, good shoes and are in good condition for this hike. As probably on of the best trails in the Lake Tahoe region you will enjoy the stunning views from the summit. Even with the best camera you probably won't be able to capture the beauty that your eyes will see and memories will retain. With both wooded areas and mountainous areas the hike gives you the diversity you are probably looking for. You will pass two lakes on this hike. The switchbacks are a steep climb taking you up to the summit which will be very hot, so be ready.

The hike to Upper Yosemite Falls is 7.2 miles round trip. The elevation at the summit is 6,526 ft and an elevation gain of 2,700 ft. You will want to do this hike from May to jUly when the waterfall is at its full force and most beautiful. You will hike through switchbacks in the forested area before coming to the flat area with your first view of the falls. Enjoy the mist from the falls as you get closer to it. You will face another set of switchbacks before reaching the summit. These are the most difficult and very steep so if you aren't in good physical condition you will want to pass on this part.

Desert hiking is a little different. It's hot and yet beautiful when you go to Mosiac Canyon. The trail is just 2.5 miles round trip but you are in the desert so it is hot. Bring plenty of water with you. The formations of the canyon are stunning; you will be able to see nature at its best and maybe even some desert wildlife while on this hike. This location is the hottest place in the US so be ready to be super hot and drink plenty of water (not sodas or other stuff, water to hydrate your body!)

Back to the mountains and this time it's the really high hike. Prepare for Mt. Shasta, the most challenging trail in California. The trial is 12 miles round trip and the summit is 14,179 ft with an elevation gain of 7,259 ft. You will work on this trail to see the beauty. The time to plan this hike is from May to mid July due to the unpredictable weather in the spring and the lava rocks and rolling boulders that come crashing down the mountain after the snow melt in the summer. Not only is this more than a hike, you will have issues with altitude sicknes if you are not careful so make sure you go with a partner for safety and practical reasons. Read all you can about this hike before you begin, it's not one for the faint of heart.

For the hike at Mt. Shasta you will want to bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and ice axe, shelter (remember, you are going way up and the weather may change in a minute where you need protection.) Bring your crampons, helmet, summit pass, winter boots, and extra layers of clothing and plenty of water. Don't plan on "ice melt" for water; bring it with you since most of the snow around Helen's Lake is contaminated by urine...yes, human and animal. Sweet.

The 16 mile round trip hike of Half Dome has an elevation gain of 4,800 ft. It reaches the summit of 8,842 ft. This hike is best between late May and early October. It is a difficult hike which brings people from all around the world to Yosemite National Park. If you aren't in excellent physical shape with lots of hiking and climbing experience behind you don't attempt this climb. The switchbacks are rocky and many ankles are injured here so be super careful. When you reach Nevada Falls you are at the halfway point of the climb. Here you should take the time to assess your strengths and skills to see if you are prepared to continue on. The climb gets tougher so be ready. Not only is the climb tough but the altitude change will require some adjustment of your body so give it a little while. Rest, and then go on. The continuation is very steep, excruciatingly long to reach the back of Half Dome rock. Your body is continually assaulted on the switchbacks during this phase. The Half Dome cables will fill you with shock and fear, they should! Now, assess your ability to continue on and if you are sure you are willing, the success of the climb will give you stunning views of Yosemite Valley below. This hike is only for those that are in good, if not superior, physical condition. If you aren't then don't do this one. There are many other trails that will better fit your ability.

2008 Box Office Hits By Derain: Free New Movies

By Perry White

This is a short list of movie hits for 2008. I have chosen a few of the films I enjoyed watching this year. Hopefully you will see some films here that are good viewing.

ROLE MODELS: Danny (Paul Rudd) and Wheeler (William Scott), who promote an energy drink, are going to see some hard jail time because they binged, and trashed the company truck. The only way to avoid serving jail time is to perform 150 hours of community service. Their task will be to become mentors in a big brother type situation. The stage is set for some good comedy.

PINEAPPLE EXPRESS: Heavy pot smoker Dale Denton has just witnessed a bad police officer, and a big time dealer, commit a murder. They see him witness the crime. Understanding that he has been seen, he unwittingly throws down his joint, a unique version called pineapple express, and gets away fast. The pot is so unique, that it is possible to find out who has it. The game is on, as Dale and his dealer Saul are deparately hidding from the bad guys.

HAMLET 2: Unsucessful actor Dana Marshz has moved on to teaching the high school theater classes to bored and unmotivated kids. When the high school loses a major building, the school administation feels that the theater curriculum will be what is dropped. Wanting to fight, he is determined to keep the school from dropping his classes by producing Hamlet 2, an original interpretation of the Shakespeare classic, which he put to paper himself.

THE DARK KNIGHT: Batman, and law enforcement officials, have been taking down the criminal elements of the city. Crime is now down, but now a new super criminal arrives on the scene, and starts a crime spree. Batman is in a battle now, as criminal mastermind, the Joker, has released his criminal insanity on Gotham City.

TROPIC THUNDER: With an abundance of acting talent we soon see this movie is a spoof on many of the most popular war movies. In order to inspire his underachieving super stars to make a first rate war movie, the frantic, and abused, director Damien Cockburn into the wild, and leaves them on thier own. The plan is to shock them so they will produce a work of genius, which hidden cameras will capture. Unbelievabley, as the director steps on an old land mine and dies, the crew is left on its own, and they think there acting, but things are getting very, very real. Written, directed, and acted in, by Ben Stiller.

WALL-E: This film is an animation comedy. Everyone has been removed from Earth because it had become a big pile of trash. Wall-E, a robot built to remove trash, has been left behind to continue cleaning. When a recon bot (Eve) appears, checking for signs of life on Earth, Wall-E finally has some company. When the spaceship returns for Eve, Wall-E sneaks aboard, and thus starts the adventure of his robot life.

Jumper: While almost drowning, David Rice discovers something incredible. He now knows he can actually teleport himself anywhere, anytime. He then comes to learn that there are others with this capability. After he becomes used to jumping around the world, he finds out that there are those that think jumpers are a threat, and need to be eliminated. He now must battle for his life, as the hunters believe he should die.

THE INCREDIBLE HULK: This film tells us the tale of Dr. Bruce Banner, who has become the Incredible Hulk because of being hit by gamma rays. This movie is an epic tale of the marvel comic character the green Hulk. This movie stars Edward Norton, Tim Roth, William hurt, and Liv Tyler. This film is directed by Louis Leterrier. The film style is sci-fi/action-thriller.

ZACK AND MIRI MAKE A PORNO: Rent is over due and Zack and Miri, platonic friends since childhoold, really need to find an answer to their money problems. The answer? Easy, start making pornos. As one can expect this seems like a good recipe for a great comedy.

These days just about everyone buys or rents films when the come out on DVD, so they can see them in the comfort of their living rooms. A more recent method for getting films is through downloads from online sources. Online providers have websites that with a membership, you can download almost any film you can think of.
